area history

Ford, Virginia

Originally known as Ford’s Depot, Ford is located in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Previously part of Prince George County, Dinwiddie County was established May 1, 1752, and named for Robert Dinwiddie who was the current Lieutenant Governor of Virginia at the time.  Land records for the area show the Coleman family as having owned property here as far back as 1652.  The area is rich in Civil War history and saw some action in the Revolutionary War as well.

For more detailed information for anyone interested, check out our subcategories listed under the History widget on the upper right.  I’ve made separate pages for history of the lake itself,  history of the Coleman family, and local Civil War history.
