We had started working on the handrails for the front porch stairs the day we finished the interior of the fireplace but ran out of time so that was the first on our agenda to complete this past weekend.
- Dave marks the post where he wants to cut
- marking the second post
- using a circular saw, Dave cuts down the post
- he finishes with the reciprocating saw
- both posts cut
- next, to bevel the top of the posts
- nice job, Dave
- now to drill the spindle holes with the drill press
- first, we sand the handrails
- Dave cut a wedge to help keep the handrail at the right angle as he drills the holes
- first hole….
- so far, so good
- my job was to hold the rail in the correct place as Dave drills the holes
- one rail done!
- very nice
- Dave places a few spindles to make sure they fit
- before attaching the handrails, we have to place the wood plugs into the screw holes on the steps
- first a little glue…
- then we hammered them in place
- after the glue dried, we sanded the plugs even with the steps
- on to sanding the rails
- in go the spindles
- top rail in place, Dave attaches it to the post
- first handrail complete!
- and, we’re done
- apparently someone else has been using the stairs
Next, we set the log mantel supports in place so Todd Hawkes and his crew could begin putting the stone around the fireplace.
- Dave cut these from one of the logs on our property and stripped the bark using a draw knife
- first, metal plates are attached to the logs
- next, Dave places screws through the metal plates into the fireplace wall
- first support in place
- on to the second one
- ta-da
After looking through countless samples of rock, we had settled on using Eldorado stone veneer in Shadow Rock Willow and were extremely pleased with our choice! Our initial reason for using a wood burning fireplace insert and stone veneer was to cut back on cost a bit but in the end we could have done a full masonry fireplace for what we ended up paying!
- when we arrived Todd had the rock pattern laid out on the floor, ready to get started
- day one….
- day two…
- day three..
- awesome!
- outside on the deck they’ve begun to rock the back of the fireplace
- same area from the side, the door leads from the deck to the master bedroom
- Max enjoys his first fire in the newly rocked fireplace
